Why?
To understand why we do this, you need to understand the current reality in the Congo and the hope that facilities like KMU bring to the future.
The Congo is the second largest country in Africa by size, covering an area approximately equal to the United States east of the Mississippi River and the fourth largest by population. Per capita income is the lowest in the world at $165/year with 85% of the population living in poverty and is home to the second largest number of extreme poor in Africa. From an agricultural standpoint, only 10% of the Congo's land is utilized to its full potential, with most arable land being used for subsistence level farming. The Congo also has the world's second highest infant mortality rate and is tied for last in gender equality.
It is into this reality that Friends of Katanga Methodist University has entered to assist an institution that exists to improve the material and spiritual lives of the people of the Congo where one of every five United Methodists in the world today lives. We believe we, along with your help, can help provide the resources KMU needs to grow, prosper and continue to enrich the people of the Congo and beyond and pray that you will join with us in extending loving hands!
